Queensland s unsung heroes recognised during International Year of Health and Care Workers

Date Time Queensland’s unsung heroes recognised during International Year of Health and Care Workers Anglicare Southern Queensland has marked International Year of Health and Care Workers by recognising the achievements of staff and volunteers who provide vital support for vulnerable Queenslanders. More than 200 staff members, volunteers and clients gathered at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre recently for the not-for-profit charity’s inaugural Excellence Awards. Anglicare SQ’s Executive Director Karen Crouch said it was important for people working in the health and community services sector to recognise the contributions they make in our local communities. “As a provider of essential care and support services for vulnerable people, our work never stops. We are all so focused on the needs of our clients, residents, children and families, that reflecting on our own achievements is often not top of mind,” Ms Crouch said.

VicHealth CEO Dr Sandro Demaio welcomed the new food standards that will be finalised and put in place by the end of this year. “This is fantastic news for the health and wellbeing of Victorians. The new standards for hospitals and aged care in Victoria recognise the important role food plays supporting physical and emotional wellbeing. Good food is crucial in supporting healthy ageing and optimal recovery for Victorians,” Dr Demaio said.

Signs that an older person may need help

It’s important to recognise the signs when an older person needs more support. Whether it’s facilitating help at home, organising respite care or choosing a residential aged care for a loved one to move into, family and friends need to be alert to the signs of distress. Below are a few of the signs that an older senior may need help and require professional support: Tea and biscuits When there’s little else in the pantry but biscuits, this can be a sign that a person is forgetting meals, not coping with shopping, or can no longer function in the kitchen. Check the cleanliness of crockery and cutlery, and look for signs of burnt saucepans.

4 ways Australia s COVID vaccine rollout has been bungled

Director, Health Program, Grattan Institute The first announcement, in August last year – that Australia had negotiated vaccine deals – set the tone for the rollout of “announceables”. Within hours, this initial announcement unravelled as it became clear it wasn’t a “deal”, but in fact a letter of intent. The federal government has made vaccine announcements thick and fast since then, with every minor milestone celebrated with media hype. It was only when vaccine announcements had to become actual vaccinations that the public became aware of the chasm between the rhetoric and the reality. The vaccine rollout has been characterised by four key mistakes, mainly caused by our leaders giving priority to a good political story over good policy.
