Prosecutors in Genoa have opened two investigations after a television program in Italy broadcast a video showing a group of police officers hitting two migrants on a train between Genoa and Ventimiglia. The migrants had holed up in a bathroom of the train.
Genoa prosecutors have opened an investigation into alleged police brutality against two migrants after on March 29 the Italian television program Striscia la notizia broadcast footage showing officers pushing, kicking and hitting with a crowbar two migrants on a train travelling from Genoa to Ventimiglia in the northwestern region of Liguria.
The scene was filmed with a cell phone on March 24 by a witness.

A study presented by the association for employers of domestic workers in Italy highlighted that domestic work is one of the few sectors in which migrants and Italians earn the same low level of pay.
The national association for employers of domestic workers in Italy, Assindatcolf, presented a study conducted with the IDOS study and research center - which produces the annual Statistical Dossier on Immigration in Italy - that revealed there is no wage gap between foreign and Italian workers in the domestic sector.
Those who are legally employed as domestic workers (colf), home carers and babysitters have an essentially equal salary, with an average annual wage that is, in fact, slightly higher for foreigners: 8,374.63 euros for foreigners compared to 7,364,61 euros for Italians, based on data from Italian social security and pensions agency INPS.

Italy s government is launching a new national project to fight the exploitation of migrant farmworkers.
A meeting between the Italian interior and labor ministers and other Italian authorities was held on March 9 at the Italian interior ministry. The goal: To improve Rome s strategy to fight the gangmaster system, including the activation of a project called Seasonal work - dignity and legality.
Migrant worker exploitation
Migrant workers are often at risk of exploitation on Italian farms. The aim of the project is to improve the management and rules of seasonal employment in order to ensure dignified and legal work conditions.

More than 5,300 migrants and refugees have arrived on Italy s coasts irregularly so far in 2021. That s more than twice the number of people who arrived during the same period in 2020. Meanwhile, the number of migrants intercepted and returned to Libya reportedly also increased.
The Italian interior ministry released new data on migrant sea arrivals on Tuesday. According to the ministry, 5,306 migrants and refugees landed on Italy s coasts between January 1 and March 2 of this year. During the same period in 2020, only 2,553 migrants and refugees arrived on Italian shores.
A majority of arrivals thus far this year (3,896) were registered in February, including 398 minors.
