Valentine s Day is coming. Meanwhile, 14.8 million people across the country have lost jobs due to employers closing and layoffs. We paint the rosy image down aisle 10, but the pandemic struggle is ongoing. That s where the Idaho Food Bank comes in with continued dedication to help families across Idaho. This week we saw cars line up at the Ford Idaho Center for hours to receive free food boxes filled for families that could use some extra love. I ve been writing about the USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program since it began last year. This is what Idaho is about and the food bank is one of the best.

Grocery distribution set in Salem SALEM– USDA Farmers to Families Food Box Program free drive thru grocery distribution presented by The Food Soldier Hunger Coalition will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Feb. 14 and 28 at Salem High School, 1200 E. Sixth St. All are welcome and no I.D. is required. Boxes will be placed in the trunk of vehicles. Enter the school parking lot from F.E. Cope Drive off of North Lincoln Avenue to receive a box. CTC conferences will be remote The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center will hold 2020-2021 first semester parent teacher conferences from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 11. Due to the current pandemic and the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center’s responsibility to reduce additional person-to-person contact, conferences will be conducted remotely. Photo credit: USDA The Farmers to Families Food Box Program, the Trump administration’s response to hunger during the pandemic, “has accomplished much and can serve as a model for future USDA fresh food purchasing and distribution efforts,” said a review of the program on Tuesday. The report made eight recommendations for improvement, including stronger emphasis on purchases from small and medium-size producers and a “best practices” guide for food distributors for dealing with food banks. Some 132 million boxes of food were distributed through the end of 2020 and a fifth round of purchases was under way. A total of $5.5 billion was allocated for the give-away program by the Trump administration. The program has been criticized as inefficient, and it went into operation without a formula to assure equitable distribution of the food across the country.

Distribution part of Farmers to Families Food Box Program Written By: Erik Kaufman | × The Mitchell Food Pantry will hold a food box giveaway Feb. 9 in the city parking lot between Graham Tire and TMA. The giveaway is scheduled for 3 p.m. The giveaway will consist of a box of produce, dairy, meat and milk for those in need. There will be a limit of one food box per household, and two maximum per vehicle. Those participating are asked to enter on Lawler Street and exit on Main Street. The parking lot will be closed until 3 p.m. The giveaway is part of the Farmers to Families Food Box Program, in which the United States Department of Agriculture is partnering with farmers, specialty crop producers, food processors and distributors and non-profit organizations to ensure that all Americans have access to fresh and wholesome food they need during the COVID-19 national emergency.
