Colleges are facing the shortages in healthcare with bold new plan

A year ago we were rightfully concerned about the number of ventilators available in our healthcare system. In the months after that there was considerable effort and innovation put into fixing the lack of nasal swabs, N-95 masks and surgical gloves.
But when things got bad, the shortage that really mattered was healthcare professionals. Specifically nurses.
As we battle through the worst pandemic in a century, nurses are working harder than ever. A survey last year of the American Nurses Association found that many were working 12- to 16-hour shifts. The ongoing shortage of nurses became a critical issue. And this isn’t a short-term problem. The United States could be facing a shortage of over 500,000 nurses by 2030, based on a formula used by the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine.
