Planning granted for urban park and street in Abbey Quarter in Kilkenny

The vision for Kilkenny s Abbey Quarter has been given a significant boost with the granting of planning permission for a major portion of the proposed site development today.
Kilkenny County Council has welcomed the decision of An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission for the development of the urban park and street which will run through the site.
“One of the key reasons for the Council purchasing the former Smithwicks Brewery site was to ensure that areas of high quality public realm could be provided within the former Smithwicks Brewery site to integrate the site into the existing city centre, says Cllr Andrew McGuinness.
Planning permission has been granted for a 23-bed hotel in the John Street area of Kilkenny City. The proposed development is situated at No s 19-20 Lower John .

Horse-free zones expected to be formally approved at next month s meeting of Kilkenny County Council don t go far enough according to the Cathaoirleach Andrew McGuinness. Byelaws banning horses from a list of city centre streets will be put forward for approval by members. This follows a proposal by Cathaoirleach Andrew McGuinness in response to ongoing issues of animal cruelty involving horses.
A total of 26 streets are on the list that was since created by Kilkenny County Council in consultation with Kilkenny Gardai. The new law will prohibit a person from having, keeping, riding or driving a horse in the listed areas at all times and declares the streets to be exclusion areas.
