Coon Rapids Man Uninjured After Truck Collides With Tree Wednesday

A Coon Rapids man avoided injury after he collided with a tree while swerving to avoid a deer Wednesday evening. According to the Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Justice Road about halfway between Bayard and Guthrie Center. Authorities say 28-year-old Schyler Andrew Knudsen was traveling northbound in a 2014 Dodge Ram pickup and failed to negotiate a curve due to the deer in the roadway. The truck entered the northwest ditch, struck a curve warning sign and came to rest after striking the tree. The accident was not discovered until Thursday morning, as Knudsen had left the scene. He did not report any injuries, but damage to the Dodge is estimated at $12,000 and $250 to the sign.

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office responded to two accidents over the past few days. The first occurred on Saturday, April 10 on Iowa Highway 141 near Horn Avenue, west of Bayard. A teenage female from Glidden was westbound in a 2008 Dodge Caliber at approximately 9:15 p.m. when she struck a deer. The driver complained of possible minor injuries, but was not transported for treatment. There was an estimated $10,000 in damage to the car. The second accident was reported at approximately 9:36 a.m. on Monday, April 12. Forty-eight-year-old Brian S. Cox of Grand Island was northbound on Frontier Road in a 2021 Infiniti Q5 when the vehicle dropped off onto the northbound shoulder. Cox lost control, entered the north ditch and struck a field drive. He was transported for treatment of injuries sustained in the accident. There was an estimated $30,000 in damage to the Infiniti.

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the State Drug Control Office to give residents easier access to medication drop off and disposal. On Monday, Deputy Sheriff, Jesse Swensen, announced the placement of a permanent drop box in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office at 200 North 5 th St. in Guthrie Center. This effort was made possible through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy in an effort to address the increasing issue of prescription drug abuse. Director of that office, Dale Woolery, says they are pleased to help with providing a secure and environmentally responsible option for the disposal of unused prescription drugs. This, he adds, will help prevent potential diversion and abuse. “Most prescription drugs that are abused come from friends or family, so cleaning out medicine cabinets can save lives,” Woolery says.
