Plans for University of Cumbria s Barrow campus take step forward

Plans to develop a university site in Barrow have taken a step forward. The University of Cumbria has signed a partnership agreement with Lancaster University to support the project. The universities will collaborate on research partnerships with local businesses and on courses offering the best subject strengths from both higher education institutions. The University of Cumbria’s plans for a Barrow campus will see it work closely with key businesses, including BAE Systems, and Furness College, in order to ensure that courses prepare graduates for career success through higher level skills. It will work closely with key partners in Barrow, including the Brilliant Barrow board and Barrow Borough Council.

Sarah Townsend The 600-acre site adjacent to the Sellafield nuclear complex has been included in a bid to host the UK’s first prototype nuclear fusion plant and surrounding science, technology and business park. The Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership is preparing to submit its bid to the UK Atomic Energy Authority, which is running a national competition to identify the best site to host a major nuclear power plant facility. Fusion nuclear represents the next generation of clean energy production and was described by Professor Stephen Hawking in 2010 as the one scientific advancement that would most transform society, the LEP noted.

Decision due on Lillyhall industrial estate expansion plan

Picture: Google Streetview Plans for the first step in a major expansion of the Lillyhall Industrial Estate will be decided on next week. Proposals for a new roundabout at the junction of Branthwaite Road and Joseph Noble Road, on the northern edge of the Workington industrial estate, will be decided on next Tuesday by Allerdale Borough Council’s development panel. The creation of the new roundabout is the first stage in a proposed northwards extension to the Lillyhall Industrial Estate, dubbed the “Lillyhall North” site. The proposals have been brought forward by Allerdale Borough Council and the Allerdale Investment Partnership.
