Work to demolish Sands Centre underway
Work to demolish the Sands Centre in Carlisle has started.
The work will make way for improved facilities including a new swimming pool and is being carried out by Wates Construction.
More than 100 tonnes of building material has already been removed from the site and the work is due to be finished by the end of this month.
Plans are in place to either reuse, reclaim or recycle the demolition material. It is expected that around 200 tonnes of material will be removed from the site in total as part of this programme of work.
Demolition of part of The Sands Centre in the city centre is well under way with 100 tonnes of building material already removed from the site. Plans are in place to either reuse, reclaim, or recycle the demolition material. The waste removed to date includes metal and timber which has been segregated from the rubble and sent off site for recycling or reuse. All the remaining rubble on site is made up of the existing foundations and bricks. This will be crushed to form part of the new build. It is expected that about 200 tonnes of material will be removed from the site in total as part of this programme of works.
AN important milestone has been reached in the £25m project to redevelop a sport and entertainment venue. Demolition is set to start on part of the existing Sands Centre building in Carlisle to make way for improved facilities including a new swimming pool. As part of its enabling works, Carlisle City Council and GLL, the council’s leisure provider, have put in place a temporary leisure facility at the nearby Newman’s School. This has now reopened following the recent national lockdown. “This is another important step forward for The Sands redevelopment, said Carlisle City Council leader John Mallinson. Even through challenging times, the project and works have continued. Thanks to all the project team for moving this important community facility forward.
