Three decades ago, former Queensland MP Rob Pyne dived off a sailing boat unaware there was a sandbank lying just below the surface of the pristine blue water.
Then 23-year-old suffered a broken spine - an injury that would confine him to a wheelchair and mean he could never walk again.
It s a day most people would like to forget but this week he was handed a bittersweet reminder of that sunny afternoon.
A waterproof wallet he had tucked between his speedos and footy shorts when he jumped off the boat was found buried in the mudbanks of Cairns beach, holding his 1991 driver s licence and bank cards.

Subscriber only Jon Sullivan, a longstanding Queensland politician who represented Queenslanders at state and federal levels, has passed away at age 70. The Bulli-born politician was elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly for Glass House in 1989 before representing Caboolture from 1992 to 1998. Mr Sullivan died on Sunday and was remembered at a funeral service on Thursday.  ALP candidate Jon Sullivan handing out how to vote forms at Narangba State School in the 2010 Federal election. A Queensland Labor MP has reportedly been banned from Townsville’s party precinct after getting into a fight at a nightclub.
According to the Townsville Bulletin, the member for Mundingburra in Queensland s Legislative Assembly, Les Walker, was knocked unconscious while celebrating his birthday at the Mad Cow Tavern and was taken to hospital before being cleared of serious injury.
The 56 year old has been banned from the precinct along with two men aged 19 and 20.
