Subscriber only Deanna Beatson was born in Rockhampton and raised in Yaamba, moving back to town for work where she met her husband of 35 years, Darren, with whom she has three children. She and her family live in Nerimbera. Ms Beatson and her husband worked for several years at the Lakes Creek Meatworks, and Ms Beatson went on to a career in the government and private sectors. She described her career highlights: advocating for women and older people, consulting with government agencies on behalf of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, working in the Department of Justice and Attorney-General to help reduce the representation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system.
