FLINT, MI Firefighters battled a blaze Wednesday afternoon at National Unclaimed Freight Furniture Carpet and Mattress Outlet in Flint.
Firefighters responded around 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, to the discount furniture store, located at 2130 Dort Highway on the city’s south side.
“People that were inside looked out the window and saw a fire and tried to put it out with an extinguisher,” said Flint Fire Battalion Chief Mark Kovach. “They realized it was too big for them to handle, so they called 911.”
Kovach said firefighters were able to cut the fire off halfway into the building and contained it to the business.

FLINT, MI At least four fires blazed through vacant businesses in Flint over the weekend, the city fire department said.
Three vacant commercial businesses on the east side of Flint were set ablaze within an hour of each other starting around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, April 18, Battalion Chief Mark Kovach confirmed with MLive-The Flint Journal.
One day before, Kovach said a fire ripped through the former Klock Korner at the corner of Dort Highway and Robert T. Longway Boulevard.
Firefighters had to go “defensive” meaning allowing the fire to burn down to the structure’s basement while putting out the flames as it was unsafe to enter the building, Kovach said.
