DeWitt, N.Y. An East Syracuse teenager drove off Kirkville Road in DeWitt and into a creek this weekend because she was distracted, state police said.
Jazmyne A. Short, 17, was distracted inside the vehicle Sunday night when she veered off the road, struck an earth embankment and went into the creek, state police spokesman Trooper Jack Keller said. He did not elaborate on how she became distracted while driving.
The vehicle Short was driving became partially submerged in the creek, Keller said.
Someone nearby called 911 at 10:52 p.m. Sunday to report the crash. The 911 caller told dispatchers the driver was able to swim to shore, although the dispatcher described the creek as small and swampy.
