YORK, Maine Get your beach blankets ready and practice your oohs and aahs because this Independence Day will feature two firework shows in York.
Following last year s canceled fireworks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, York Beach Fire Department Chief Jeffrey Welch announced Thursday, May 27, that this year s displays are a go.
The announcement may receive a warm welcome from those who missed grilling hot dogs at the beach, calming their anxious pets down, or simply watching dazzling bursts of light magically appear in the sky.
Fireworks are scheduled to take place if guidance from the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention and local health officials remain the same as they currently stand, Welch said.

YORK, Maine A group of boaters near Long Sands Beach recorded a large basking shark floating at the surface of the water Monday evening with a picturesque Nubble Lighthouse and purple sky as the backdrop.
Taylor Phillips said she, Bill Hancock and Kerry Makambo were sailing about a mile out from the shore like they always do twice a week. Phillips and Hancock have worked together at the Ogunquit Lobster Pound for the past five years and have gone out boating together since.
“We always hope to see something, but we never do,” Phillips said.
That changed Monday, May 18, when the group spotted the shark while they were out on their boat. They later posted a video of the encounter on social media. Given the size of the boat, Phillips guessed the shark could have been about 20 feet in length.

ALFRED, Maine Jeffrey Buchannan had been scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning for a status conference in his prosecution for the alleged murder of Rhonda Pattelena, but the hearing was postponed.
Buchannan s defense attorney, Jon C. Gale, asked the judge for a delay of at least 30 days because state authorities have not yet completed their examination of the defendant and issued their report, according to court documents.
During an initial court appearance March 30, York County Superior Court Judge Wayne R. Douglas had ordered that Buchannan undergo a mental health evaluation and be held without bail. Douglas said he expects the matter will proceed to a grand jury.
