TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Trey Cunningham was named to The Bowerman 2021 Men’s Pre-NCAA Indoor Watch List, announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) today (March 4).
The senior from Winfield, Ala. has remained consistently at the top this indoor season. He is coming off the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, where he earned his fourth Championship gold in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.67.
Cunningham’s performance at ACC Indoors makes him the first ever athlete to win four straight titles in the 60-meter hurdles. It also makes him one of just four male athletes to win four indoor golds in ACC history.
Cunningham currently stands as the NCAA leader in the 60-meter hurdles with his 7.55 winner from the Tyson Invitational on February 13. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State senior Trey Cunningham was selected U.S Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) South Region Men’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Year this Thursday. He is joined by South Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year, Kelly Phillips. These awards are voted on by USTFCCCA member coaches and honor coaches and athletes from each of the nine regions.
“Trey is certainly deserving as the South Region Track Athlete of the Year,” said Head Coach Bob Braman. “He’s been the dominant track athlete in the region this entire year.”
Award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches. Only those individuals from USTFCCCA member programs are eligible for awards.
Many of these honored athletes and coaches are headed to the
2021 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships next week in Birmingham, Alabama.
Men’s Track Athlete of the Year
ATLANTIC REGION – Julian Griffin – Wheeling
Griffin, a freshman from Lebanon, Ohio, is ranked first regionally in the 60H at 8.28.
CENTRAL REGION – Ryan Riddle – Missouri Southern
Riddle, a sophomore from Webb City, Missouri, is ranked third nationally in the mile at 4:01.07. He is also ranked 20th nationally in the 5000 at 14:09.72. Riddle earned the MIAA High Point Award at the conference championships with victories in the mile and 3000 as well as runner-up effort in the 5000.
