216 THE Repressive Laws Committee began its sitting on Thursday last. Three things are important in connection with a Committee of its kind: its scope of reference, its personnel and the witnesses it examines. As regards the first of these, there is not much to say in the present case. The list is exhaustive. At any rate, it includes all the more obnoxious measures, such as the Bengal Regulation III of 1818 and corresponding regulations in other Presidencies, the Seditious Meetings Act, the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1908, the Defence of India Act and the Rowlatt Act. As regards the second, perhaps the most obvious criticism is that the two major provinces where in recent years repression has been practised to a larger extent than in any other are both inadequately represented on the Committee. Bengal is represented by Sir D.P. Sarvadhikary, who may know a good deal about such things as temperance, reform and education, but who has never been connected with our public movements

Security forces arrest PLFI member carrying bounty of Rs 2 lakh, with 7 others in Jharkhand

URL copied Image Source : PTI Based on the credible input about the movement of a number of PLFI cadres, an operation was launched by the troops of 60 CRPF and Jharkhand Police Security forces have arrested a People s Liberation Front of India (PLFI) area commander carrying a bounty of Rs 2 lakh on his head along with seven other members of the banned outfit from Jharkhand. The arrested area commander Manoj Purti has been named in 50 cases of criminal offences including murder, attempt to murder, extortion, and arson. Jharkhand government had declared a reward of Rs 2 lakh on Purti s head for his involvement in these cases. All the eight Maoists were arrested from West Singhbhum in Jharkhand on Tuesday.

More than 125 unidentified persons have also been booked for indulging in violence during the polls. An FIR has been registered at Barhpura police station on the instructions of senior officials. SSP Etawah Brajesh Kumar Singh told reporters that Barhpura police station in-charge Jitendra Kumar Sharma had filed a case in this regard. A case has been registered on Sunday evening against 125 people, including BJP leader Vimal Bhadauria, a resident of Udi, under the relevant sections of IPC including 147, 148, 149, 323, 353, 307, 269, 270, 188, 51, 57, 3 and section 7 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act (CLA) Act.
