Last Week, The Bill Was Passed In The Lok Sabha With Most Of The Leading Parties In The Opposition, Including The Congress, Voting In Favour, But With Caveats. It Was Passed After The House Rejected A String Of Amendments Moved By Various Opposition Members.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill seeking to criminalise instant divorce, triple talaq, was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday amid protests by Opposition. As Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad tabled the bill in Rajya Sabha, the Opposition created a ruckus in the house.
The Modi led BJP government used the big majority to its advantage in the Lower House to pass a bill criminalising triple talaq among Muslims even as sections of the opposition demanded amendments in the proposed law and a small minority rejected the legislation.

There was no Winter Session of Parliament due to the pandemic.

The budget session of Parliament is likely to be cut short and may conclude before the first phase of elections on March 27, while the two Houses will resume their normal timing of 11 am onwards from Tuesday.
Several parties had requested that the session, which was originally scheduled to continue till April 8, be curtailed due to the assembly elections in four states and one union territory being held between March 27 and April 29.
