Headteacher criticises lack of winter gritting

A PRIMARY school headteacher has questioned why a road used by key workers is not ploughed and gritted more regularly in icy conditions. Andrea Hayes, headteacher of Gillamoor C of E Primary School, was driving home on February 12 (Friday) when her car skidded and left the road on Starfits Lane in Fadmoor. Andrea said she did not believe the road, which runs through North York Moors National Park, had been properly treated by the council’s highway maintenance team during the adverse weather. “Starfitts Lane in Fadmoor and the lack of gritting or ploughing is a disgrace,” she said. NYCC say it is not a priority road as you can get to Gillamoor School from Kirkbymoorside, but that road was not treated either and was a death trap, so some parents refused to bring their children in.

Salt bins to be replenished after car flipped onto its roof on ice rink road

SALT heaps and salt bins are to be replenished in the district after a car crashed and flipped onto its roof on the road from Settle towards Kirkby Malham. Farmer Godfrey Haygarth, who farms at Springfield Farm, said the road called High Hill Lane, accessed through Upper Settle, was like sheet ice and the crashed vehicle, which snapped a telegraph pole in half, was blocking the road so he couldn t get to his animals. Other people who had children at school were unable to get past. The occupants of the vehicle were believed to be a mother with a baby and small child who was travelling from the Malham direction towards Settle. There were no reports of any injuries.

City s Snowplow Tracker available online

/ Napanee Today Dec 10, 2020 1:46 PM You can now track the progress of City snowplows at CityofKingston.ca/Snow. The Snowplow Tracker, an online map that shows when roads were last plowed, is an innovative tool to help pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists get around this winter. “The Snowplow Tracker is an opportunity to see our snow clearing efforts in a new, visual way,” says Bill Linnen, Director, Public Works. “Our crews work continuously during winter weather events to clear over 1,800 km of roads. The Snowplow Tracker allows you to see that progress across the city.” When a plow is in motion clearing roads, it will send frequent location data that will be displayed on the map. The map uses different colours to indicate the last time a road was plowed, showing all Kingston roads and residential areas.
