Dr. Mona’s Period Poverty project gives 12,000 menstrual products to Flint students Updated Mar 12, 2021; Facebook Share FLINT, MI A team of medical and pediatric residents and Flint Southwestern High School staff delivered more than 12,000 menstrual products to a local high school. The goal of the Period Poverty project, spearheaded by Mona Hanna-Attisha, MD, associate professor of pediatrics at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine, is to reduce school absences because of a lack of period supplies and the high cost of obtaining them. An often-ignored public health crisis, nearly one in five girls miss school for lack of period supplies, according to a MSU-Hurley Children’s Hospital press release.

The Hope Starts Here virtual resource summit is scheduled from from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25. Families will have the chance to learn about health care resources, rental assistance and housing needs, and employment and job training.
