UN Chief urges countries to step up global plan for COVID-19 vaccines

UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, on Monday urged countries to take bold decisions to end COVID-19 pandemic crisis and build a safe and healthy future for all.
In a video message to the World Health Assembly, Guterres warned against the dangers of a two-speed global response, a concern he had frequently expressed.
The Health Assembly is World Health Organisation (WHO)’s highest decision-making body and is attended by delegations from all around the world.
“Sadly, unless we act now, we face a situation in which rich countries vaccinate the majority of their people and open their economies.

NEW YORK The COVID-19 pandemic “must be a turning point”, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said on Monday, urging countries to take bold decisions now to both end the crisis and build a safe and healthy future for all.
In a video message to the World Health Assembly, the decision-making body of UN agency WHO, Guterres warned against the dangers of “a two-speed global response”, a concern he has frequently expressed.
“Sadly, unless we act now, we face a situation in which rich countries vaccinate the majority of their people and open their economies, while the virus continues to cause deep suffering by circling and mutating in the poorest countries,” he said.

The government has expressed its “deep displeasure” at not receiving an invitation to this year’s World Health Assembly (WHA) and being excluded from the decisionmaking body of the WHO for a fifth consecutive year.
In a joint letter of protest issued yesterday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Health and Welfare, Minister of Health and Welfare Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) said that this year’s WHA is focused on the response to COVID-19, and building a healthier, safer and fairer world together.
Tuesday, 25 May is set aside to celebrate the formation of the African Union’s predecessor, the Organisation of African Unity, in 1963. Since then, Africa Day has become about so much more than one organisation. Civil society has marked the day with various events to highlight the common challenges and victories of African countries.

A report on COVID-19 reforms convened by the Whitney R. Harris World Law Institute in the School of Law at Washington University in St. Louis, in partnership with the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, was submitted to a World Health Organization panel in preparation for a final report at a WHO meeting on pandemic preparedness.
The 100-page report includes contributions from eight international researchers, including Leila Sadat, the James Carr Professor of International Criminal Law and director of the Harris Institute; Madaline George, senior fellow at the Harris Institute; and Rupa Patel, MD, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Washington University School of Medicine.
