YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 11, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian and international community has become concerned with the protection of the rich Armenian spiritual, historical, and cultural heritage found in the territories transferred to the control of Azerbaijan as a result of the recent bloody war unleashed against Nagorno-Karabakh. The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Russia and France, as well as the EU, have emphasized the importance of protecting the Armenian Christian heritage found in these territories, and have supported the involvement of UNESCO in the process.
As early as November 20th last year, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay declared the necessity of protecting the monuments of Nagorno-Karabakh and the inadmissibility of attempts to distort their identity. Barbados receives international assistance to protect its cultural property: the digitization and conservation of slavery records
At the 15th session of the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on 10-11 December 2020, the decision to provide Barbados with international assistance from the Fund for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict was adopted. The amount of USD 46,000 goes to the 10-month project Strengthening and Protecting Barbados Cultural Property: The Digitization and Conservation of Slavery.
In accordance with paragraph 166 of the Guidelines for the Implementation of the Second Protocol of 1999 ( the Guidelines ), the Committee Secretariat also approved funding for Ecuador and Mexico of US $44,400.00 and US $43,178.85 respectively.
Work Ongoing to Compile a Complete Inventory of Artsakh Cultural Sites Now Under Azerbaijani Control
Specialists in Artsakh are working to complete a list of Armenian historical and cultural sites captured by Azerbaijani forces in the recent Karabakh war.
Only the state list of immovable historical and cultural monuments of the Shahumyan (Karvachar) region of Artsakh is ready, which includes 377 monuments.
This list includes the Dadivank monastery complex (guarded by Russian peacekeepers), the Dadi church and its underground mausoleum that was excavated in 2008, a royal palace, the 9th-14th century fortress in the village of Knaravan, the 9-11th century palace/fortress, the monastery of St. Karapet in Chapni, numerous stone crosses, etc.
