Press watchdog calls on Israel to avoid harming journalists in Gaza

May 14, 2021 The Committee to Protect Journalists, a global press freedom watchdog, has called on Israel to protect reporters covering the unrest across Israel and the Palestinian territories, as well as refrain from targeting buildings that house media outlets.  “Israeli authorities must cease arresting and attacking journalists, who play a vital role reporting the news and bringing clarity amid chaos,” said Ignacio Miguel Delgado, the committee s Middle East and North Africa representative.  In the West Bank on Wednesday, Israeli forces arrested Hazem Naser, a Palestinian cameraman for Al-Ghad, according to a report by the Amman-based broadcaster. On Thursday, Turkish state-owned Anadolu Agency reported that two of its Palestinian journalists were injured in an Israeli strike in Gaza.

A policeman then pulls him with the handcuffs. What do we know about the charges? According to AP, Thein Zaw s lawyer said he faces charges under a law that punishes spreading false news, causing fear, or agitating for a criminal offense against public employees. In August, Bizilj organized for Navalny to be evacuated by private plane to Germany after he fell into a coma in the Siberian city of Omsk. Russia says there is no evidence the longtime Kremlin critic was poisoned. Al Jazeera s Mahmoud Hussein: Four years in an Egyptian jail | Mahmoud Hussein News

Al Jazeera has condemned the continued imprisonment without charge of its journalist Mahmoud Hussein by the Egyptian authorities. Wednesday marks four years that Hussein has spent “in prison under arbitrary and illegal detention by the Egyptian authorities”, the network said in a statement. “Hussein remains detained without formal charges nor trial, making his detention period a violation of both Egyptian and international laws.” Mahmoud Hussein was arrested on December 23, 2016, while visiting his family for a holiday. “Since then, he has suffered, both physically and mentally, under the arbitrary imprisonment of the Egyptian authorities,” Al Jazeera said. During his time in prison, Mahmoud Hussein’s detention has far surpassed the maximum period for pre-trial detention, violating both Egyptian and international law.
