Nurse Zennia Pecina cried Thursday morning after she was one of the first people on Guam to receive Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine at a temporary government clinic at Okkodo High School.
“Tears of joy,” said Pecina, who is an administrator for the Department of Public Health and Social Services. “I want normal. . I want to be able to hug my children and my mom and not have to worry about bringing anything home as a frontliner.”
Pecina, Public Health Director Arthur San Agustin and Dr. Robert Leon Guerrero, a pediatrician, received their vaccinations simultaneously in the school cafeteria, kicking off the three-day clinic and taking the first step to protect the island from COVID-19.
Vaccine shots start Thursday at Okkodo High, two hospitals
Healthcare workers will receive the island’s first COVID-19 vaccine shots on Thursday, at a vaccination clinic to be set up at Okkodo High School, according to the Joint Information Center.
A temporary vaccination clinic, closed to the public, will be set up in the school’s cafeteria and gym. A processing area, triage center and vaccination tables have been set up in the cafeteria.
Those who receive their shots then must wait in the gym, where they will be monitored for 20 minutes to ensure they don t have a bad reaction to the vaccine.
