Guam Memorial Hospital has been slowly falling apart. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assessed GMH and recommended building a replacement facility  The estimated cost: As much as $743 million, including $21 million in improvements necessary to restore accreditation.   Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero plans to use $300 million from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 to construct a new public hospital.   While Del. Mike San Nicolas has said the current administration would have to look very closely at how the funding is justified and may have to tie it into the pandemic somehow, the governor has said she was confident American Rescue Plan guidelines would allow for it. 

GovGuam reports 138th Covid-19-related fatality

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Guam’s 138th Covid-19-related fatality occurred at the Guam Regional Medical City at approximately 11:17 a.m., May 5. The patient was a 54-year-old male with underlying health conditions. He was admitted to GRMC on April 29 and tested positive upon admission, according to the Joint Information Center. Our island mourns another loss to this deadly virus. To those who knew him, Jeff, Josh, and I offer our deepest condolences and sympathies. May you find comfort in the outpouring of love and support from those around you, said Guam Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero. Though we grieve, we must not grieve as others with no hope. We have the tools to prevent any more loss of life and call upon the community to do what is necessary to prevent any more days of sadness.

A 59-year-old man became Guam’s 137th COVID-19 fatality on Monday – the island’s first death from the coronavirus respiratory disease in nearly two months. The man tested positive after arriving at Guam Regional Medical City hours before his death, according to the island’s Joint Information Center. The U.S. territory’s previous COVID-19 death happened on March 13 – a 60-year-old woman who’d been hospitalized with the virus since Jan. 18 – the government said at the time.
