Now, once floundering programs will be flushed with cash, after the island receives $604 million in American Rescue Act funds.  After months of penny-pinching measures, a huge debate over what the government should prioritize lies ahead.  Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero has the authority to allocate the rescue plan s funds locally. The Guam Economic Development Authority has asked for $30 million to prop up suffering small businesses, and the Guam Visitors Bureau asked for $38 million to repair Matapang beach park and handle operations.

Our View: Take advantage of free job training opportunities Pacific Daily News View Comments Guam’s workers were hit hard by the shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly those who work in the island’s hotel and restaurant industry.  Many had their hours dramatically reduced or lost their jobs, and those who qualify have had to rely on federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. But that money expires in September, and the island’s tourism industry won’t recover any time in the near future.  Despite record unemployment on the island, there are opportunities for those looking to expand their skill sets by getting free training in a new career.
