The worst off are those who face criminal offences for which bail is not allowed. Even if they are eventually proven innocent, they would have spent a lengthy period behind bars. As criminal lawyer Dinesh Muthal pointed out, court hearings cannot proceed when the country is under lockdown, leaving many cases untried for an indefinable period.
