El Paso educators are receiving COVID-19 vaccinations at a more rapid pace, but many already have been teaching classes in person since last year, with more set to return to school campuses soon.
Some El Paso school districts also are considering whether to continue offering remote instruction in the summer and fall.
Students whose parents opted for remote learning have been able to learn virtually at all Texas schools this school year, and that will continue for the remainder of the school year, not including the summer, the Texas Education Agency said.
Summer school is separate and is handled by school districts, although districts can, and many will, offer virtual learning for summer classes, according to the TEA.
A tuition increase at EPISD will affect seven out-of-state transfer students in grades 1-12 and will take effect in the 2021-22 school year.
Enrolling out-of-district students impacts funding for student expenditures incurred by the district, which could lead to fewer resources for providing instructional services within the district s 2021-22 budget, according to the agenda item. EPISD trustees unanimously approved the increase Tuesday.
The district receives very few out-of-state transfer students each year, and most actually come from outside the U.S. So that might be for example, the Mexican Consulate, they are kids who typically live in Mexico but they go to school here, said EPISD spokesperson Gustavo Reveles.
The event will work like a traditional spelling bee. Three judges and one pronouncer will meet in person at the EPISD board room. A control room will be set up to monitor the competition and secure its fairness. Competitors will go through rounds spelling words until a winner is determined.
The winner will compete for an invitation to the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee, which was canceled in 2020 due to safety concerns about large gatherings of people during the pandemic. The event hadn t been canceled prior to last year since World War II.
Not all regional winners will compete nationally this year because of the pandemic.
