Study finds mechanism leading to herceptin resistance and Rx approach to reverse it

E-Mail New Orleans, LA - Research conducted by an international team of scientists discovered a mechanism that leads to Herceptin resistance, representing a significant clinical obstacle to successfully treating HER2-positive breast cancer. They also identified a new approach to potentially overcome it. The work is published online in Nature Communications, available here. This work attempts to understand why some HER2-positive breast cancer patients do not benefit from treatment with Herceptin, which is a generally effective HER2-targeted therapy, explains Bolin Liu, MD, Professor of Genetics at LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine and Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center.

Ankle Treatment Study Included in New U S Physical Therapy Guidelines

2 Min Read Published on: 20 hours ago Findings by Loma Linda University researchers on lateral ankle sprains have been included in two new clinical practice guidelines established by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Researchers from the Physical Therapy department of Loma Linda University School of Allied Health Professions in Loma Linda, California, United States, identified an alternative approach to help clinicians examine and treat patients with chronic lateral ankle sprains and instability. They found that muscular impairments in the hip are associated with abnormal movement patterns in those individuals with chronic ankle sprains. Based on their study results, researchers recommend clinicians include hip muscle performance in the assessment protocol and support interventions, with a special focus on the inclusion of hip muscles when treating patients with chronic ankle sprains.

Dana Young: Resiliency while facing a pandemic

As I’ve shared before, our students and employees at Treasure Valley Community College have been incredibly resilient in responding to the challenges we all faced this past year due to COVID-19. We have redesigned classes to allow for more online options, reconfigured classroom space to provide social distancing and reimagined campus events to include creative student activities like outdoor yoga, make-and-take activities and grab-and-go treats. But admittedly, we are anxious for the return of concerts, dances and group gatherings. One of the events we especially missed again this year is our annual TVCC Foundation Donor Recognition & Scholarship Recipient event. Instead of an in-person event complete with delicious desserts as we’ve enjoyed in the past, we held a virtual recognition on Thursday night. Complete with an online tour of the new Career & Technical Education Building, the evening was a great way to virtually showcase our campus, students and donors.

Study identifies specific antioxidants that may reduce oncogenic HPV infection in women

E-Mail New Orleans, LA - A study led by Hui-Yi Lin, Ph.D., Professor of Biostatistics, and a team of researchers at LSU Health New Orleans Schools of Public Health and Medicine has found that adequate levels of five antioxidants may reduce infection with the strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV) associated with cervical cancer development. Findings are published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Although previous studies have suggested that the onset of HPV-related cancer development may be activated by oxidative stress, the association had not been clearly understood. This study evaluated associations between 15 antioxidants and vaginal HPV infection status no, low-risk, and oncogenic/high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) in 11,070 women aged 18-59 who participated in the 2003-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
