Construction’s apprenticeship levy spend revealed
Construction firms have paid more than £290m in apprenticeship levy contributions,
Construction News can reveal.
This month marks four years since the tax was introduced on companies with a wage bill above £3m. It is charged at 0.5 per cent of an employer’s annual pay bill.
The levy applies to all sectors, but through a Freedom of Information request to HMRC,
CN has established that, between April 2017 and December 2020, construction firms paid in a total of £290m.
According to the Education and Skills Funding Agency, which manages the money paid through the levy, it is impossible to establish how much has actually been used by builders because it does not collect information on what sector the companies accessing funds paid belong to.
