Govt to tighten grip on commodity market

The government is tightening its grip on the commodity market by introducing a new price-fixing method.
As part of the efforts, the government has formed a nine-member committee to set up a new price-fixing method for 17 commodities, declared as essential commodities.
This move aims to allow the government to have more authority in fixing the prices based on the international or base prices of the widely consumed items.
A total of 17 food items have been declared as essential commodities. These include onion, garlic, lentils, chickpeas, dried chilies, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, seeds of coriander, seeds of cumin, ginger, turmeric, bay leaves, edible soybean oil, edible palm oil, sugar and edible salt.

Bangladesh will get new facilities in commerce besides increasing status of the country for LDCs (Least Development Countries) graduation meeting all the three criteria of graduation, said Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) President Sheikh Fazle Fahim. With LDCs graduation, foreign investment and employment opportunities will increase in Bangladesh which will boost country’s economy, he added while addressing at an online workshop titled “Effective Partnership with the Private Sector for Sustainable Graduation” organised by Support to Sustainable Graduation Project (SSGP) of Economic Relations Department on Saturday.

Business leaders of Bangladesh, China, India and Myanmar (BCIM) are exploring ways of cooperation in trade and logistics in the sub-region under the Covid-19 epidemic situation.

FBCCI and MIT solve launches virtual Solveathon
The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce (FBCCI) in partnership with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Solve will be hosting a virtual Solveathon on Saturday, January 30 to generate and refine great ideas to Global Challenges.
The program titled ‘Virtual Solveathon Powered by MIT Solve’ is being initiated for the first time in Bangladesh executed by FBCCI Tech C.
The Solveathon Workshop will be based on the following four MIT 2021 Challenge themes: Resilient Ecosystem, Health Security and Pandemics, Equitable Classrooms and Learning Spaces, and Digital Inclusion for Economic Justice. In order to participate in this unique program interested candidates and their team must register by submitting ideas on dealing with the aforementioned challenges efficiently.
