Photo: File Students took to Twitter once again but this time it was the Cambridge students who have started a trend to catch Federal Minister for Education Shafqat Mehmood s attention. The trend has emerged after the education minister announced O Level and A Level exams are being rescheduled for the October/November session, while A2 Level exams will continue as per the timetable.  The students are demanding the minister ask the UK-based Cambridge board to let Pakistani students opt for school assessed grades (SAGS).

Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood on Sunday said that it is not his place to make decisions related to exams from a health standpoint as such decisions are taken by medical experts.  Speaking during Geo News programme Naya Pakistan about holding exams despite students protest given the rise in coronavirus cases across the country, Shafqat Mehmood said that Cambridge examinations will start tomorrow as per the schedule. The government will ensure that all coronavirus standard operating procedures (SOPs) are strictly followed in the examination halls. We are closely monitoring the situation and [action will be initiated] if the SOPs are violated during the exams, the minister said.

In a hearing on Thursday, the petitioner told the court that Cambridge exams across the world were being taken online or were moved to School Assessed Grades. “Pakistan is the only country where thousands of students are being called in to sit for the assessments amid a pandemic,” he said. Advocate Jibran Nasir, who first approached the court over the matter, pointed out that exams are starting from April 26.

The petition was filed in the court on Friday on behalf of O and A level students across the country. Earlier this month, the government announced that O level exams will begin on May 10, while As and A level assessments will begin on April 26.
