Restaurant owners across New York state say an unheard-of labor shortage has stymied their ability to dig themselves out of the financial shortfalls that have come as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
And it comes at a time when warmer weather and the freedom that comes with vaccines are making diners, cooped up all winter, more eager than ever to go out to eat. When they do, these diners will likely see the effects of the workforce shortage, including adapted menus, hard-to-find reservations, higher prices, and, in the end, fewer restaurants.
“Across the board, for the front of house and for kitchen staff it’s been near impossible to find staff, said Tyrone Azanedo of Maura’s Kitchen in Nyack, Rockland County. I think it’s a combination of things: They’re getting unemployment money, may be too scared to come back or have left the industry.

IOWA, USA 6,770 initial unemployment claims were filed last week in Iowa, an increase of 2,168 (47.11%) from the previous week.
5,877 initial claims for the week of March 28-April 3 were by people who work and live in Iowa, and 893 were by individuals who work in Iowa but live outside the state. For the week ending April, 2021, nearly 50.9% of claimants indicated their claims were not COVID-19 related, which is a decrease from 52.0% the previous week, Iowa Workforce Development said in a release.
The IRS plans to refund any tax payments to individuals first, followed by couples who filed jointly. The repayments will come in phases, continuing through the summer. The agency notes that most people will not need to take action on their own to get the refund.
Millions would have owed taxes on unemployment benefits
About 40 million people received an estimated $580 billion in unemployment benefits in 2020, according to a report from the left-leaning Century Foundation. But some states did not offer workers the option to withhold taxes from newly created unemployment programs, such as the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program.
