May is only three days old, but the month is already looking good for Fairfax County on the pandemic front.
The Fairfax Health District, which also includes the cities of Fairfax and Falls Church, reported 53 new COVID-19 cases today (Monday) the fewest since just 33 cases came in on Oct. 7. That brings the county’s seven-day average down to 82.4 new cases, which is the lowest since the weekly average stood at exactly 82 cases on Oct. 21.
However, where the Oct. 21 number was merely a brief dip in what would escalate into the area’s winter surge, this new low for 2021 is part of a decline in new cases that has lasted since April 13, when Fairfax County recorded 231 new cases and averaged 194.4 cases over the past week.

More than 20 states not ordering all available doses as COVID-19 vaccinations slow By Max Bayer, Alexander Tin
Updated on: May 3, 2021 / 6:01 PM / CBS News Nearly 40% of U.S. adults have been vaccinated
As the pace of vaccinations continues to slow across the country, more than 20 states are not ordering all the available COVID-19 vaccine doses allocated to them by the federal government, according to a CBS News tally.
The figure is the latest sign of lessening demand for vaccinations around the country, as health officials shift from triaging a flood of people clamoring for the shots to targeting harder-to-reach communities.
CBS News reached out to health departments in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and among the 38 states that responded, 22 said they weren t ordering all the doses available to them for the week of May 3.
For the past month, all residents 16 and older have been eligible to receive the vaccine.
A couple of weeks ago, students at Copperas Cove High School and Crossroads High School in Copperas Cove were afforded the opportunity to receive a vaccine.
Across the state, vaccine providers administer either the Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
Some providers are listed below. Some can be found on the Texas Department of State Health Services website, and others are designated providers through the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. Availability is dependent on supply.
