New Bill Gives Rural Broadband Authority To USDA

This would put the Department of Agriculture in charge of calling the shots for rural broadband rather than the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Georgia Representative Austin Scott mentioned, “The FCC’s had their chance, and they haven’t gotten it done.” The bill is one of a few different proposals from House Republicans. Scott says the bill would help with new investments for USDA connectivity programs to bring high-speed internet to rural America. Specifically, the bill would allow $3.7 billion per year for rural broadband programs. For example, the ReConnect Rural Broadband Program, the Middle Mile Broadband Program, and the Innovative Broadband Advancement Program. (FedScoop) Share May 25, 2021 | FEDSCOOP Federal IT procurement leader Keith Nakasone will leave his role at the General Services Administration at the end of May. He departs after working at the agency since 2017 as deputy assistant commissioner of acquisition management within the Office of Information Technology Category (ITC). Nakasone’s last day is June 1, leaving GSA after 32 years in the federal government to take up a role in the private sector. Following his departure, Nakasone’s responsibilities will be taken on in an acting capacity by Cheryl Thornton-Cameron, who is executive director of ITC Schedule Contract Operations at the agency.

But others can t afford it.  When the novel coronavirus forced schools to shut down last March, Maegen Wagner, a single mother living near Reading, Pennsylvania, was thankful for at least one thing: She didn t need to worry about how she d pay for internet service.  Since her divorce in 2017, the 39-year-old mother of two children had been enrolled in Comcast s Internet Essentials program, which offers low-income families broadband access for only $9.95 per month. While money was already tight before the pandemic began, things got even worse for Wagner when she lost her assistant teaching job just as remote learning classes resumed in the fall.
