The Michigan Public Service Commission today approved applications by Thumb Electric Cooperative of Michigan for first-time designation as an eligible telecommunications carrier (ETC), allowing the co-op to access federal funds for the construction of broadband infrastructure in areas lacking access to high-speed internet.
The Federal Communications Commission s Rural Digital Opportunity Fund will provide up to $20.4 billion towards the expansion of broadband into unserved and underserved areas, with a focus on improving network speeds.

In its latest effort to block West Des Moines partnership with Google to bring high-speed Google Fiber internet to the city s residents, internet provider Mediacom is seeking a federal review of what the company alleges are the city s discriminatory rights-of-way management practices.
Mediacom said in news release that it filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission alleging the city is imposing discriminatory burdens on other internet and telecommunications service providers by granting Google Fiber exclusive authorization to install cables on land throughout the city.

We tracked down Nick and Nicole Long in southern California. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the Longs ran a fictitious robocalls company, Solar Research Group.
Solar Research Group called millions of numbers on the “Do Not Call” list from the company’s headquarters in Orange County.
Nick Long had been sued by the government before. A decade ago, he agreed to never place another robocall again.
