(WKBT) The Federal Communications Commission’s Emergency Broadband Benefit will make substantial discounts on broadband service and computers available to consumers beginning Wednesday. The pandemic-related program will continue until the $3.2 billion in federal funding runs out or six months after the Department of Health and Human Services declares an end to the pandemic, according to an FCC news release. Eligible households can receive the following discounts off monthly broadband service: Up to $50 a month Up to $75 a month for households on qualifying tribal lands One-time reduction of up to $100 to buy a laptop, desktop computer or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.

Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over broadband expansion. “The policies proposed by our Democratic colleagues and the Biden administration include federally regulating the rates that private companies can charge for broadband service,” she said.
