A New York Attorney General investigation Thursday found that 18 million of the 22 million comments submitted to the FCC during the 2017 rollback of federal net neutrality rules were fake, with millions of fraudulent comments funded by a broadband industry campaign.
Why it matters: Federal agencies are required to take public comments into account while developing regulations, but gaming the system with fake comments distorts public opinion and compromises the process integrity.
Driving the news: Attorney General Letitia James outlined a secret campaign by an industry trade group and three companies to influence the Federal Communications Commission s repeal of the net neutrality rules in 2017.
Facebookâs âsupreme courtâ on Wednesday approved the ban that blocked former President Donald J. Trump from using Facebook and Instagram after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol â but said the social media giant should define how long the penalty will last.
Readmitting Trump would have provided the former president with expanded social media connections to his supporters. Denying Trump will not silence him online â he already has a new website â but it does make it harder for him to have an extensive Web presence since he also is banned from using a Twitter account, a situation not involved in todayâs announcement.

FCC Can t Trump California Net Neutrality Law, 9th Circ. Told
Law360 (May 6, 2021, 7:23 PM EDT) California s top legal officer has urged the Ninth Circuit to swat down an industry challenge to the state s net neutrality rules, saying the Federal Communications Commission s repeal of a similar regime does not prevent states from pursuing their own open-internet laws.
Internet service providers want the appeals court to reverse a lower court decision that turned down a preliminary injunction against the 2018 state law, which reimposed net neutrality rules in California. The rules prohibit providers from blocking, slowing, interfering with or granting priority to web content.

Twitter banned an account themed around Donald Trump’s new communications platform, even though Trump’s team denies that they set up the account. The Masters of the Universe called the account a case of “ban evasion.”
Trump launched his new website, “From the Desk of Donald J. Trump,” yesterday. The platform allows the president to communicate directly to his followers.
Shortly afterwards, an account seemingly linked to the website, @DJTDesk appeared on Twitter, only to be swiftly banned by the far-left platform. However, a source at Team Trump told the
New York Post that they were not responsible for the creation of the account.
