New York accuses broadband companies of making false comments about net neutrality and Internet news
By Erik Larson and Todd ShieldsBloomberg
The largest U.S. broadband companies funded a “secret campaign” in 2017 to generate millions of false comments from the Federal Communications Commission to cover the repeal of the regulator’s prediction of net neutrality rules, New York law enforcement chiefs said.
The state concluded in a four-year investigation that companies had concealed their involvement in the effort, which resulted in 18 million false comments out of a total of 22 million on the hot vote issue, New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement Thursday.

The Office of the New York Attorney General said in a new report that a campaign funded by the broadband industry submitted millions of fake comments supporting the 2017 repeal of net neutrality.
The Federal Communications Commission s contentious 2017 repeal undid Obama-era rules that barred internet service providers from slowing or blocking websites and apps or charging companies more for faster speeds to consumers. The industry had sued to stop these rules during the Obama administration but lost.
The proceeding generated a record-breaking number of comments â more than 22 million â and nearly 18 million were fake, the attorney general s office found. It has long been known that the tally included fake comments.

The Federal Communications Commission announced in February 2021 that it approved funds to provide internet subsidies for low-income families through the establishment of the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.
Eligible households will be able to enroll in the program beginning May 12th to receive a monthly discount off the cost of broadband service from an approved provider.
The FCC says the program will provide eligible households with discounts of up to $50 a month for broadband service, and up to $75 a month if the household is on Tribal lands. It also will provide a one-time discount of up to $100 on a computer or tablet for eligible households, the FCC added.
