An online film screening event titled ‘Berlinale Spotlight World Cinema Fund’ will begin at Goethe-Institut in the capital on Friday.
World Cinema Fund (WCF) initiated the film screening series in South Asia (India, Paistan, Srilanka and Bangladesh), said a press release on Saturday.
The online series will showcase outstanding international productions in the next four months. In addition to the sessions, each screening will be followed by a live QA Talk with the filmmakers moderated by award-winning auteur Director Kamar Ahmad Simon from Bangladesh.
Kamar himself has been awarded with WCF for his upcoming film ‘Shikolbaha’ (Iron Stream). All the films have been carefully picked from more than two hundred WCF awarded films. The selected bundle has already been in official selection of many international festivals and made notable audience reception for their cinematic brilliance.
Starting January 18, 2021, filmmakers from Ethiopia are invited to apply for film development funding and training offered by DW Akademie. Are you a filmmaker in Ethiopia? Have you already made at least one film? Do you have a concept or script for your next feature film, documentary or short film? If you answered “yes” to these three questions, then you qualify to apply for our Film Development Fund.
Up to five successful candidates will receive a maximum of 10,000 euros and one year of professional mentorship to help develop their film idea. The program will include workshops and skills development by industry professionals mainly from the Global South and is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). These tailor-made trainings will enable you to take your project through the development stage and get your film ready for production.

Loujain al-Hathloul’s fight continues
Women s rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul is appealing against her verdict. A court in Saudi Arabia had convicted her of being a terrorist – for getting behind the wheel of a car, among other things.
She is not giving up: Loujain al-Hathloul wants to appeal against the verdict of Saudi Arabia s Specialized Criminal Court, the country’s highest terrorism court. Loujain cannot live with the fact that she is convicted as a terrorist, Alia al-Hathloul, Loujain s older sister, told DW. According to the Saudi court, an appeal can be filed within 30 days of the verdict. My sister is very brave and she will fight for her innocence to be recognized, although there is a risk that an appeal could lead to a different verdict, al-Hathloul said.
