Randolph County nurses spread awareness of issues with surgical smoke

As COVID continues, Piedmont area nurses and operating room staff are already at risk of exposure but another invisible enemy, surgical smoke, is a concern as they work tirelessly to save their patients lives. Surgical smoke results from human tissue being cut with mechanical tools and heat-producing devices, such as lasers used for dissection.  Karen Lemmons, legislative chair for North Carolina with the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurse, recently talked to Randolph Health and found that funds could be the delaying factor in being smoke-free. Lemmons believes there is always a drawback with legislatures anytime money is involved. Whenever there s a need for funding projects, it seems like the brick walls are coming up.
