Ketchikan school district announces cluster of COVID-19 cases related to wrestling tournament, prom

Ketchikan School District officials are asking parents and students to be on the lookout for COVID-19 symptoms after five people who attended last weekend’s high school wrestling event tested positive. In addition, an individual who attended Kayhi’s prom and a parent-sponsored after-party also tested positive for COVID-19.
Ketchikan High School will be closed Wednesday, with all students learning online. All after-school activities Tuesday and Wednesday are also canceled.
The district says public health nurses and school district staff are reaching out to people who were potentially exposed.
KETCHIKAN (KDN) â The Ketchikan Emergency Operations Center announced seven COVID-19 cases on Tuesday; two that were reported late on Monday and five involving individuals who attended weekend events at Ketchikan High School, prompting Kayhi to close for students and staff on Wednesday.
The Ketchikan School District announced in a press release on Tuesday afternoon that it had âbeen notified of five positive COVID-19 cases of individuals who attended the wrestling tournament held at Kayhi on April 23 and 24, and one individual who attended the Kayhi prom and parent-sponsored after prom party held on April 24.â
The release noted that âPublic health, district nursing staff, and coaching staff are working together to identify close contacts.â

KETCHIKAN (KDN) â The Ketchikan Emergency Operations Center on Tuesday recorded two new cases of COVID-19 in the community, and Ketchikan Charter School announced that it would reopen for in-person learning on Wednesday after being closed to students and staff on Tuesday due to a positive case involving an individual connected to the school.
One of the cases recorded by the EOC on Tuesday involved a symptomatic individual, and one involved someone who was asymptomatic, according to a late Tuesday afternoon press release from the EOC. One case was determined to be close contact to a known positive case, and one case remains under investigation, the EOC release read.
Three student-run groups at Ketchikan High School have been encouraging their classmates to celebrate Earth Day by developing awareness activities, including a social media project, prize raffles, and a schoolwide spirit week.
Kayhi s Rotary Interact Club and the Kayhi National Honor Society jointly have presented the Earth Day Challenge 2021, which encourages students to take pictures and videos of themselves completing certain environmental activities. The challenge will run through the end of the month and culminate in a video collage created by Kayhi students.
And the newly formed Kayhi Environmental Club hosted an informative Spirit Week with earth-friendly themes to educate and inspire students during the week before Earth Day.
