Cuban-born veteran a leading contender to be Biden s Navy secretary POLITICO 4/28/2021 By Lara Seligman and Connor O’Brien © U.S. Navy via Getty Images Members of both parties are anxious for Biden to pick a permanent Navy leader as the administration weighs a massive expansion of the fleet unveiled in the waning months of the Trump administration and prepares a fiscal 2022 budget that will have to balance costly shipbuilding programs with major programs from other services. Carlos Del Toro, a Cuban-born Navy veteran and CEO of a tech solutions company, is a leading contender to be President Joe Biden’s pick for Navy secretary, according to three people familiar with the discussions.

The People of Myanmar Have Rejected the Generals ASEAN and the World Must Do so as Well
The People of Myanmar Have Rejected the Generals. ASEAN and the World Must Do so as Well Time 1 hr ago Alex Aung Khant © Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images A poster showing de-facto leader of Myanmar s military government, General Min Aung Hlaing, is torn in half on railings outside the country s embassy, on 8th April 2021, in London, England. Myanmar’s political turmoil started much earlier than the coup d’ état that took place on Feb. 1. For the past ten years, the military has put on a grand show of relinquishing its power, and certainly appeared to do so when Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy (NLD) won elections five years ago. But all of that was merely superficial, as the military-drafted Constitution of 2008 reserved a quarter of parliamentary seats for military officers, and gave the generals control of three key ministries Defense, Border Affairs and Home Affairs.

El Mundo/Richard Salvino: Archivo de Guatemala review – perfect balance of sacred and profane
El Mundo/Richard Salvino: Archivo de Guatemala review – perfect balance of sacred and profane Andrew Clements © Provided by The Guardian Photograph: Hiroyuki Ito/Getty Images Over the last two decades or so the wealth of music that was composed from the 16th century onwards in colonial Latin America has been systematically investigated and performed again. Much of it has been unearthed in cathedrals and missions across Central and South America. Jesuit archives in Bolivia, for instance, were the source for three fascinating discs from Florilegium, and recordings of collections from Ecuador and Brazil have also been released. This disc by the baroque group El Mundo and its director, guitarist Richard Salvino, shifts the focus further north, to what was found in the archives of the cathedral in Guatemala City.
