The Silver Arrows are on a run of dominance in Formula 1 unlike anything the series has seen before, winning both the drivers’ and constructors’ World Championships for the past seven seasons. With the regulations remaining rather stable, the team will be hoping the W12 will be the car to continue that dominance and bring this era of Formula 1 to a close in style before the new regulations arrive in 2022.

Mercedes fear missing something on the W12

Mercedes fear ‘missing something’ on the W12 PlanetF1 17/02/2021 © Getty Images Mercedes Mercedes admit to being racked with anxiety over their preparations for the new season, worrying “have we missed something?” with the W12. The reason for the insecurities is the relatively static regulations for 2021, which mean large parts of the World Championship-dominating W11 have been carried over to the new car. That means much less work in terms of creating and building the W12 has been necessary than will be the case, for example, next winter before the sweeping rule changes for the 2022 F1 campaign kick in. Therefore, according to Mercedes technical director James Allison, there is a fear that something, however obvious or obscure, may have been overlooked in putting together the challenger that will be driven by Sir Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas this year.

Mercedes work this winter unusual and intense

The Mercedes team’s technical director revealed in November that work had been taking place on creating the 2021 car “for several months”, which suggested the pressure would not be so high on them during the off-season to get everything prepared. But even though a new chassis is not required, with a large proportion of the 2020 car carried over, Allison nevertheless has cited aerodynamic changes as presenting a considerable challenge.
