The Frenchman was hospitalised after a terrifying crash at the Bahrain International Circuit which saw him go through a barrier in the cockpit of his Haas after the car broke in two and burst into flames upon impact. Thanks to the brave and swift intervention of medical personnel, Grosjean escaped with only burns to his hands, though those burns in particular to Grosjean’s left hand meant he couldn’t take part in the final two rounds of the 2020 season.

Bianchi tragically passed away in 2015 due to the injuries he suffered at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix after going off in the wet conditions and hitting a recovery vehicle. His incident though was the catalyst for the creation of the Halo head-protection device, and it’s this invention which saved Grosjean’s life at the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix. On the opening lap of the race Grosjean speared into a barrier, causing his Haas VF-20 to break into two pieces and burst into flames.

The Frenchman’s final moment in an F1 race looks like being the 137mph accident in which his Haas car clipped Daniil Kvyat’s AlphaTauri, speared into the barrier, split into two and burst into flames. Mercifully, Grosjean was able to clamber from the burning wreckage in less than half a minute and over the barrier to safety, unharmed physically apart from burns to his hands and a sprained ankle.
