Grosjean confirms Merc test talks in progress PlanetF1 22/02/2021 © Getty Images Romain Grosjean Romain Grosjean has confirmed Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff has called him about a possible farewell test. The Frenchman was not retained by Haas beyond the 2020 season and his time in Formula 1 ended with a horrifying crash at the Bahrain Grand Prix which ruled him out of his intended final two races. Understandably, it was not the way Grosjean wanted to close his Formula 1 chapter, having made his debut back in 2009, but soon there was talk of a possible farewell run in a Formula 1 car for Grosjean before he moved on to the next stage of his career in IndyCar.

‘Hello Toto, it’s Romain. Remember that offer…’ PlanetF1 4/02/2021 © Getty Images Romain Grosjean Romain Grosjean is “very keen” to take Toto Wolff up on his offer for a Formula 1 test after Haas said they couldn’t do it. Grosjean’s Formula 1 career ended abruptly, the Frenchman crashing in a fiery wreckage at the third last race of the 2020 season, the Bahrain Grand Prix. Such were his injuries, predominantly burnt hands, that Grosjean wasn’t able to take his place on the start grid at the final two races, bringing his time with Haas to an early end. Making it clear that he didn’t want the Bahrain crash to be his final experience in a Formula 1 car, the 34-year-old said he would like to do a private test with a team, any team.

The Frenchman moves Stateside from Formula 1, where his last action was the horrific crash on the opening lap of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix from which he miraculously escaped with burned hands and a minor leg injury. A month earlier, the Haas team had announced that Grosjean’s five-year stay with them would be ending, along with that of fellow driver Kevin Magnussen – who has already begun a new phase of his career racing sportscars in America.

Grosjean: Hamilton wouldn t win points in Haas car

Grosjean: Hamilton wouldn’t win points in Haas car PlanetF1 2/02/2021 © Getty Images Romain Grosjean Romain Grosjean has claimed Lewis Hamilton would “never have been able to fight for points” if he drove last year’s Haas car. Hamilton, now a seven-time World Champion, has often been subject to comments that the main reason for his success is the car that he drives and not his ability. It’s a debate which certainly isn’t new to Formula 1, but it was strengthened even further when George Russell swapped his Williams car with the W11 in Hamilton’s absence at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix, and he put in a mightily strong performance.
