Hamilton’s new contract with the Brackley team has finally been announced but, much to the surprise of many, is only a one-year deal. That has led to speculation regarding what his plans are beyond the 2021 campaign, and former F1 driver Albers thinks that the Brit could follow the money. “I see him switching to another team where he can earn more,” Albers said on De Telegraaf’s F1 podcast.

Seven-time World Champion Hamilton has been the subject of a media circus in the past few months as his contract saga with the Silver Arrows went on for far longer than many expected. It was always likely to happen though, and the deal was eventually struck and announced on Monday, with the 36-year-old signing a one-year contract. There have been many suggestions as to why it took so long for a deal to be agreed, such as Hamilton bargaining for more money and demanding that he has choice over his team-mate, though those claims have been rubbished by Mercedes principal Toto Wolff.

With five weeks to go until the cars take to the track in pre-season testing, Hamilton has yet to publicly commit his future to Mercedes. Money and the duration of the contract are believed to be the two sticking points with the seven-time World Champion wanting a raise and a multi-year deal. According to speculation, Mercedes are instead offering him space on his overalls to place personal sponsorship while the length of the contract will be one season, 2021, with an option for a further year.
