Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear reported 796 new cases of COVID-19 and the number of vaccinated Kentuckians is slowly growing.
Approximately 1.75 million Kentuckians have now gotten at least the first dose of a COVID vaccine, and the governor says that’s good but the pace needs to pick up. He says the sooner more people get vaccinated, the sooner things can safely return to normal.
Ten more people have died due to coronavirus in the state, along with two deaths identified in the ongoing audit of the state reporting system. The positivity rate is now at 3.12 percent.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear gave an update on COVID-19 in the Commonwealth Monday, reporting 213 new cases and a decrease to the positivity rate.
Kentucky still sits around 1.7 million people vaccinated so far, putting the state at roughly 800,000 left to go to reach the governor’s goal of 2.5 million. The governor says they are already lifting some restrictions in response to the rollout, including announcing that the mask mandate will change slightly people outside at events with 1,000 people or less will no longer be required to wear a mask.
The mask mandate remains in place for indoor activities of all kinds, and for events outside that exceed 1,000 people. He says this week had fewer reported COVID-19 cases compared to last week, and the positivity rate went down to 3.15 percent.
US Federal health officials have announced that fully vaccinated Americans can go without masks when walking, jogging or biking outdoors, or dining with friends at outdoor restaurants. US President Joe Biden celebrated the change in later remarks, urging people to get inoculated not just to protect themselves and those around them but so they can live more normally, by “getting together with friends, going to the park for a picnic without needing a mask”. The guidance from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention addresses growing calls from infectious-disease and other public-health experts to relax mask mandates for the outdoors because breezes disperse airborne virus particles, distancing is easier, and humidity and sunlight render the coronavirus less viable.
