Canton is almost done with an electric vehicle charging station project

CANTON  Drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles soon will have two fast-charging sites to choose from in Canton.  Two Greenlots stations in the parking lot of Stadium Park are expected to go live in about two weeks and complete a project that includes two ChargePoint stations in a parking lot along Tuscarawas Street E. The ChargePoint stations off Tuscarawas Street east of Walnut Avenue NE already are usable. An American Electric Power initiative and the increasing popularity of electric vehicles drove Canton to install the DC fast chargers. A $300,000 AEP grant covered the cost of installation, and the Engineering Department will pay ongoing electric fees.

Renovations continue at the former Wells school building in Canton

CANTON  The former Wells Elementary School is still a work in progress.  Gary Gergley has undertaken the renovations started in 2019 by his daughter Kynsey Wilson, who planned to convert the McKinley Avenue SW building into a home and community hub. Her plans changed, though, and he went from helper to project leader. Kynsey fell in love, and her family s in South Carolina, where she now lives, Gergley said. She had purchased the three-story, brick school in February 2019. Constructed in 1926, the school became Canton City School District offices by 1983. It closed entirely in 2008 and had remained empty. A portion of the first floor is now complete with Gergley s office and meeting rooms, where he trains people to run their own insurance agencies for American National. He lives in Zoar but spends most days at the school property, which remains listed under a limited liability company.

Jackson Township Fire Chief Tracy Hogue said his arm wasn t even sore after he received a COVID-19 vaccine shot. It was easy, and I would encourage people to take it, he said. I think it could be the beginning of the end of this.   Hogue and several other local health and fire officials said the number of first responders who opted to receive the initial shot in the past few weeks has been better than expected.  The Jackson Township Fire Department had 60 people about 66%  opt to participate in the two-shot Moderna vaccine administered by local health departments. Only one employee had mild symptoms the next day, Hogue said.

CANTON  Significant upgrades are planned for Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium as it becomes the permanent home of McKinley High School baseball. The Canton City school board on Monday approved a 25-year agreement with the city of Canton to use the facility and make $611,000 worth of improvements to the former minor-league facility at 2501 Allen Ave. SE that was built in 1989. Canton City Council has yet to discuss the agreement.  “This is going to be a fantastic place,” Canton City Schools Superintendent Jeff Talbert said. “Another facility that our folks can be proud to call home and it’s in line what we’ve always done for our students and athletes in this district.”
