(ABC 6 News) - The River City Morning Kiwanis have come up with a selfless way to continue their mission to serve the youth of north Iowa.
Every Friday morning at 6:30, the group of over 80 people get together and think of ways they can help make a positive impact on the lives of local children. During the pandemic, those early morning meetings didn’t happen in person, which saved them a lot of money.
“We decided to look for any opportunities where we could donate it back to the kids in our community,” said club member Keila Larson.
North Iowa school districts made out big in the most recent wave of government education funding.
The Iowa Department of Education announced the allocations of the third wave of the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) to school districts in Iowa.
School districts in northern Iowa all received a substantial amount of money from the new ESSER fund, with the Mason City school district taking home $6,224,140, the 16th highest total in the state.
Congress set aside $13.2 billion from the Educational Stabilization Fund, a part of the CARES act, for ESSER out of the $30.75 billion total allotment to the fund. This is all under the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act signed into law on Mar. 11 earlier this year.
About 620 educators serving Mason City Schools will receive a one time cash payment for working during the COVID-19 pandemic, officials announced Monday.
The 3% bonus is part of a three-year agreement with the Mason Education Association, approved by Mason City Schools board of education during a Monday evening board meeting.
Few other school districts across the country have planned similar COVID-19 bonuses for teachers, including a $1,000 per employee bonus at Metro Nashville Public Schools, according to a report from the Nashville Tennessean. Employees in the Osnaburg Local School District in Canton received a $500 bonus in November, according to the Canton Repository.
