New Jersey And Pennsylvania Casinos Resume Indoor Smoking One-Year Ban Ended Last Weekend For Casinos In Both States by Steve Schult | Published: Jul 13, 2021 Associated Press, the year-long ban on smoking inside Atlantic City casinos expired last weekend, which allowed smokers to resume smoking indoors once again. A nearly identical ban in neighboring Pennsylvania expired as well. The main difference between the two states is how the casinos have responded to the lifting of the ban. In New Jersey, all nine Atlantic City casinos have resumed smoking inside. Whereas, in Pennsylvania, only three properties resumed indoor smoking. CBS affiliate, Rivers Casino, Live! Pittsburgh Casino and the Meadows Casino are the only properties to resume smoking and will only allow it to be done in designated smoking areas. New Jersey casinos also implemented designated smoking areas, which will make up about 20% of the gaming floor.

But in Maryland, a state that has always banned casino smoking, gross gaming revenue (GGR) is booming in the aftermath of the pandemic. Maryland’s six commercial casinos won $172.4 million in May. It was the state gaming industry’s all-time best month. June marked yet another solid showing. GGR last month totaled $161.5 million, 12.6 percent better than June 2019.

(AP) â For a year, Gary Scromo of Staten Island, New York, would either walk outside one of Atlantic City s casinos if he wanted to smoke a cigar, or just do without one if the weather was bad. But last weekend, he was once again able to light up inside the casinos as a year-long ban, inspired by the coronavirus last July, expired. âI walked inside and saw the ashtrays, and knew: Smoking is back,â he said. Smoking is indeed back at the nine Atlantic City casinos. But not everyone is happy about it, and even the state s governor is hinting he might look favorably on a bill that would permanently ban it inside the gambling halls. Democrat Phil Murphy said last week, âI would be very constructive on that,â stopping short of saying he would sign the legislation.
