It’s the challenge the UAlbany women’s lacrosse program hasn’t been able to solve for years.
The Great Danes, though, don’t approach their latest matchup with Stony Brook, their top nemesis, with a sense of dread. It’s not easy to take on a program that’s defeated them in 16 consecutive matchups and the last seven America East Conference championship games, sure, but Saturday’s 1 p.m. league championship game at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium on Long Island was inevitably where the Great Danes’ season was headed.

Leading up to Thursday’s America East Conference semifinal against Vermont, members of the UAlbany women’s lacrosse team promised they weren’t looking past the Catamounts to a potential meeting in this weekend’s championship game against rival Stony Brook.
The Great Danes, clearly, meant it.
On the way to a 17-8 victory against Vermont at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, UAlbany opened Thursday’s game on Long Island with eight unanswered goals.
“We came out flying,” UAlbany head coach Katie Rowan Thomson said during a post-game teleconference.

ALBANY A championship rematch with Stony Brook, in all likelihood, looms.
And, make no doubt about it, that’s the game that will largely determine the way this UAlbany women’s lacrosse season gets remembered.
But the Great Danes cannot play that game, the one their program needs to find a way to win to move forward, until this weekend and they won’t play that game unless they take care of business Thursday against Vermont in the America East Conference semifinals at Stony Brook’s Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Kendra Harbinger’s already pictured in her mind how it might play out, the cheering and celebrations Saturday at John Fallon Field if she and her UAlbany women’s lacrosse teammates can end the program’s 15-game losing streak against America East power Stony Brook.
“We’ve really been putting in the work, and I think this year, more than ever, we have a huge shot,” Harbinger, a senior midfielder/attack, said Wednesday during a teleconference with reporters. “It would be the best feeling ever, as a senior, to top them.”
